Are you sincere, open hearted, loving caring and compassionated. Are you willing to make a commitment to children and adolescents? Are you able to provide a structured and consistent home for children? Can you provide safety and support to children and teenagers?

There is a serious need for homes for teenagers 13 -17 years old.
 

1.What is foster care?
Foster care is family care for children who need substitute care during period when their own parents are unable to care for them. It is a temporary situation. Foster care is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
 
2. Why do some children need foster care ?
There are many reasons why some parents cannot take care of their children. Children come into foster care as a result of abuse, neglect and abandonment.
 
3.What are children in foster care like?
Foster children are like any other children. They range in age from newborn to teenagers. There may be one child or there may be two or more, brothers and sisters.
 
Children in foster care have the same problems as other children. Unfortunately, they may have some additional needs and problems due to their circumstances.
 
4.What does it take to be a foster parent?
A willingness to be flexible and able to work with children that have some behavior problems. It means being able to work with birth famillies to maintain relationships and support reuntification.
What do I need to become a certified foster parent?
 
1. Be at least 21 years old.
2. Have an extra bedroom in your home.
3. Complete 18 hours training. (MAPP)
4. Complete CPR/First Aid.
5. Pass Criminal Records Clearances.
6. Have a safe and clean home.
 
There are several steps to becoming a certified foster parent.
 
The first step is to attend a Get Aquainted Meeting. This will provide information you will need to make important decisions about becoming foster parent. It will provide you with more insight about foster care in Los Angeles County.
 
The second step is a thirty hour training course. The course is called MAPP(Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting). It is a ten session course that helps you prepare to become a foster parent.
 
The third step is the evaulation process. This step includes completing the application packet and a home evaluation.
 
The final step is certification. When you have completed all the requirements,a final meeting is held. At that time you will be able to have children placed in your home.
